Racing Types

Horse racing betting is very popular in the world, and it shouldn’t surprise us. There are more than 300 horse breeds in the world, so, of course, there are different types of horse races. All of them have unique histories and cultures. Let’s take a closer look at the most popular racing types that you can use for horse racing betting online.

Type 1: Flat Races

The first documented history of horse races goes back to ancient times. It is evident that horse racing has been popular for a very long time, and it was often held in conjunction with other sporting events. Since then, people have been learning how to play horse racing betting.

Flat races are very popular, as horses are bred for their speed, strength, and stamina. They do so on either turf or dirt oval tracks. The distance of these races can vary, but the most common one is around 3 km.

There are plenty of popular horse races in the world, such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, American Oaks, Santa Anita Handicap, and so on.

A sub-category of horse races here divides them into three categories:

  • Claiming horse race – The horses in this race can be bought (claimed) for a price, regardless of what happens in the race.
  • Allowance races – The horses here must meet specific standards to enter the race. They are not for sale, but they need to meet some requirements, such as not having earned tons of prizes or won a lot of races
  • Stakes races – These races will offer the highest prize money for the horses that win. Stakes here refer to the money put up by owners as part of an agreement with other owners who have entered the race with their horses.

Type 2: Steeplechase Horse Racing

The second type of race that offers plenty of entertainment is the steeplechase horse racing. This is a type of race where horses jump fences and water jumps. It is surely among the oldest forms of racing, and records of these races date back to 1776.

Steeplechase horse racing originates in Ireland, and nowadays, there are tons of horse races that you can bet on and watch. Arguably the most popular steeplechase is The Grand National. It is one of the oldest horse races in England, and it happens every year since 1839, with one exception.

Type 3: Endurance Horse Racing

Just like the previous types, endurance races have a long history. Riders used to value certain types of horses for their ability to endure the most difficult rides across vast distances. Endurance horse racing can range from 40 to over 150 miles and it often takes several days to finish.

Races here are broken into groups based on the experience of both the rider and the horse. The fitness level is also taken into consideration. There are some endurance races that are classified as non-competitive. These races are usually around 25 miles.

There are plenty of endurance races that offer you different types of horse racing betting. The Progressive Trail Riding is one of them, with the Tevis Cup Being one of the most popular races in this category. It covers 100 miles.

Other, notable names here include the Tom Quilty Gold Cup and the Shahzada, both of which are held in Australia. The first one is a 100-mile race, while the second is 250 miles and it takes five days to complete.

Type 4: Harness Racing

The last type of race is Harness racing, and here horses will race at a trot or pace while pulling a driver in a sulky (a lightweight two-wheeled carriage that can hold one person). You need to know that the person guiding the horse here is not called a jockey. Instead, it is referred to as a driver.

Drivers are the key here, as they need to be athletic and intelligent. Not always the fastest horse wins, it is often the one that has the most skilled driver.

Probably the only horse breed that is used in harness racing is the Standardbred. They have the ideal temperament for harness racing, as they are calm, intelligent and social animals.

Two-horse harness races were introduced in the Olympics in 408 BC, so harness racing has a very long history.
